We are so excited to have author Morgan L. Busse stop by the Crosshair Press blog today! “Awakened” is the title of the second installment in her award-winning steampunk series, The Soul Chronicles. It was released this November, and we asked if she would give us a bit more insight into what got her started on this intriguing storyline that brings together life questions, airships, and adventure! We can’t wait to see more from her.
Could Necromancy ever be used for good?
That was the question posed on a forum years ago. As I thought about it, my answer drew near the “no” spectrum. But as I thought about the question, this image of a woman pop into my head, a woman who—because of her father’s dabbling in necromancy—became “tainted” and was searching for a cure before the monster inside of her consumed her.
Originally The Soul Chronicles were supposed to be set in a fantasy world. Then I took a class by Jeff Gerke and he encouraged us to look outside the box. Was there a different world we could set our stories in? At that time I had just stumbled upon the steampunk genre and fell in love. I realized it was the perfect genre for Kat’s story. Science, cool technology, and Victorian culture.
So I started writing Tainted, the first book. One day, I was having lunch with a writer friend and telling her about my new project. She looked at me and said, “that sounds like a Frankenstein retelling.” I sat back and realized she was right! I’ve always been fascinated with the Frankenstein story, the story of a monster who tries to figure out who he is, why he exists, and longs to be accepted by his maker. But instead of a maker who wants nothing to do with his creation, I wanted Kat to have this love/hate with her father, and her father wants Kat, but only because he wants the power inside of her.
I loved writing about Kat Bloodmayne because through her I explored the idea what if instead of our souls already being dead, what if we could feel our souls dying inside of us? What would it feel like? How would it change us? And how would we go about finding a cure (and what would the cure be?). I’m also a science geek and loved tying in my love of science and my love for God into a story where a young woman who knows nothing of God to finding his love in the end. A love that far surpassed that of her own father.
And that’s how The Soul Chronicles came to be.
